If you’re in my family, you have a nickname. You just do, so you might as well get over it.
Hang tight family…you’re about to get outed.
My mom, Michele….affectionately called Mitch.
My sister, Vanessa…Tink, Tinka, Tinka Link. Pretty sure this has nothing to do with Tinkerbell, but her Disney obsession has me wondering.
My little brother, Tommy…Moonyuh…I don’t know how to spell that. I think that is the first time I’ve ever put that word to pen, or key rather.
My cousin, Shantel…Coo-Coo, Cook (said with oo like in tooth), Shanny…
And then there’s me.
Jake the Snake
My mom gets really irritated when people call me Jess because she insists that she named me Jessica for a reason. But she has no problem calling me Chula. Come on mom, where’s the logic?!
My grandma (who is responsible for at least 5 of those nicknames!) is going to be really excited that I just shared that list.
You see, my Grandma is my biggest fan and cheerleader. When Jami and I were first launching the MADE site, I knew my Grandma would be so proud of me and want to make all the comments. So I decided to be a little proactive. I called her (or maybe texted) and said, “ok Grandma, you can comment on our website, but please don’t call me Chula. And don’t say things like: oh my little chulita wally, I’m so proud of you. I want people to take me seriously.” And so these are the comments I get from a very supportive and lovely lady named Barbara:
I assure you, she does not care about how to cut onions and she is not going to try my meal plan. But there she is anyways, commenting so sweetly and calling me Jessica.
Sometimes I get embarrassed by my nicknames, but they were given to me out of love and affection.
Do you know what God calls you out of His love and affection?
Righteous (Romans 4:12)
Loved (Jeremiah 31:3)
Redeemed (1 Peter 1:18-19)
Forgiven (1 John 1:9)
This is just the beginning of who you are in Christ. It may not be as fancy as Chulita Wally, but it’s definitely just as special.
